A while back I revisited this thread and asked for advice on a single-cup coffee brewer that wasn't a Keurig. Just to update you -- and I know you've all been furiously refreshing your browsers for the past two months as you awaited this update -- I went with a French press for a while, which was fine, but then my wife bought me a Hamilton Beach model (http://tinyurl.com/zh4wfgh) for my birthday. It fits perfectly atop the microwave in my classroom, and few things give me more pleasure than brewing a perfect cup of coffee each morning. Perfect for my needs.

This looks like a far better choice than Keurig for the office. How fine a grind do you use on this machine?

Except that I think those are all really the same brew method aren't they? drip - with different levels of fancy-pantsness.

The actual different methods woud be drip/steep-press/high pressure (espresso)/low pressure steam, etc. And how the grounds are separated from the coffee makes a big difference - where apparently I'm a Barbarian cause I like all the oils and such that get through a mesh.

I just bought a Hamilton Beach Flex Brew coffee maker for our RV.  You can use ground coffee or k cup pods.  We're  done with Starbucks.

Good old Hamilton Beach.  I remember my family getting one of their popcorn poppers in the early 70s.  That was high tech for the time.

So I got fed up with pod brewing after reading an article about how damaging the spent plastic pods are for the environment.  I was browsing in Cost Plus World Market in Palm Springs and stumbled upon an AeroPress.  I bought it to use in our RV, but I like it so much that I now use it at home exclusively.  It's fast, easy to clean, and makes great coffee.  I'm still perfecting the technique, which puts the artisan in the cup.  ;D

I most often use a ceramic Melitta with recycled filter cone. Three heaping measures for one cup, a bit beyond coarse grind. A touch of boiling well water to wake up the grind then subsequent pours from a height of 10 inches. Philz barristers make a big deal out of pouring from higher but that’s all theatre.

Actually, I've come to appreciate their theatrics seeing as how they're the only coffee gig going close to the 4th & King Caltrain station at 5:30 am on weekdays

There there’s a decent coffee shop a little further down fourth street if you prefer espresso.  I used to go to it back when I used to work at UCSF.  And if you are willing to go to the Dogpatch, Piccino is well worth it.

I finally bought a metal filter for my Aeropress.  I really like it.  It takes a few seconds more to clean up, but it saves that time and more when setting up a new cupping.

The rubber seal on my Aeropress plunger finally wore out.  I was happy to find a replacement on Amazon.  Popped the old one off, pressed to new one on, and it's working as good as new.

BTW, I spent 21 days in Costa Rica in February.  Did a coffee plantation tour where I learned a lot about the process of making coffee.  Very informative.  Don't grind those beans until you're ready to brew.  The grounds start losing their flavor ini 12 minutes.  I discovered that really good coffee needs no creamer or sweetener.  Those are only used to mask bitter coffee.  Oh, and Starbucks uses Robusta coffee beans and over roasts them.  Robusta is such an inferior bean that it is illegal in Costa Rica to plant them.

I don't like coffee, but I had a delicious cup on a Costa Rica coffee plantation tour.

The guide fried the beans in a cast iron pan to what would be considered a very light roast.

He told us that if the beans smells good while you're roasting them, you're burning away the oils that make the coffee taste good.  He also said that Starbucks has tricked everyone into drinking dark roast which is simply cooking lower-quality beans until they're burnt to make them taste the same.

in 1979, when i was 14, i spent a week without my parents near a small coffee plantation in Colombia.  it was just me and this Colombian family with four kids, one of whom was a boy my age.  

what i remember most were the sounds i heard at night.  so many frogs and other animals......unforgettable.

I always found it interesting that the company that makes the Aeropress also makes the Aerobie frisbee.
