I was told by a former player that for Williams & Swann, their decisions have nothing to do with academics.

But frankly I don't care what the reasons are for the five guys who clearly would be starting or on the two-deep. Something has them wanting to leave and it doesn't reflect well on the program. Meanwhile, Shaw sits in his ivory tower taking zero action after the worst season in his HC career.

You can only bring in the number of recruits for spots you have open. The 2017 class has yet to have the impact it was suppose to have and 2016's class wasn't as impactful as it was suppose to be either.  

Would other programs have fared better with these same recruits? We'll never know. But a strong argument can be made that Stanford is recently doing less than it should on the field with the talent it is collecting off of it.

There are a lot of moving pieces in terms of scholarship spots.  It depends on who else enters the portal and whether any of those in the portal withdraw their name and come back.  There is also the matter of whether Parkinson and/or Adebo go pro.

By my math, if we do in fact get 22, we will probably be at the 80 - 85 scholarships level.

It's not easy to envision Parkinson or Adebo in the NFL.  Adebo, maybe, if he can be coached up. The physical tools seem to be there. Parkinson needs a ton of route-running tutelage and body leverage/control. Compare him to Fleener, Ertz, Hewitt, Reuland, Toilolo, Dray, et. al.

I agree with you.  For a guy of his size and speed, he played like a smaller and slower tight end.  He was still able to get a second team all-Pac-12, but I think that was mostly on his raw tools.  There's a lot of room to improve.

The other thing I'd love to see from him is him being more physical.  I don't remember a ton of plays where he caught something in traffic and he made the DB/LBer covering him miss a tackle.

I would note that the NFL will draft him on the basis of the physical tools and hope that the rest can be developed.  As a reminder, draft position is based on projected future value, not past accomplishments.

Fast forward to this year and, what should occur, two players -- Terry and Jones - arrive and are freshmen starters.  Lo and behold, the team looks a whole lot better, ...but Ryan's prospects for being a 4-year star [for Stanford, at least] look a whole lot more questionable.  Maybe Ryan [or his camp] had an idea this might happen.

The point being:  Maybe his [or any transfer's] reason for leaving stems from the fact that the team's prospects may actually be improving, even if his personal situation might not be.

As for the absolute certainty in your assessment of Shaw's activities, I was wondering whether you are rooming at his house, stalking him, or hacking into some video devices in his office?

The difference between 2013 and 2018 was that 2013 followed a big and deep class.  The 2018 class followed a small (but high quality class).  You can't have small back-to-back classes and not expect to have problems down the line.

As someone who pays $9.99 a month to know this stuff, Haase bringing in a true PG did in fact have an effect on the Ryan camp.

Yes on all of this. The class following '17 should've looked a lot more like '19 in terms of size and positional distribution, in fact. But we got '18. I do think there was some acclimation to the new signing period that affected '18, but still, yeesh.

Shaw also did not rule out changing responsibilities of the existing staff, although I suspect that it it happens, it will be "around the edges". If one accepts a broader definition of "doing something", we can know he did something when and if we identify it. Unfortunately, he may do something we don't see or hear about, so SamuelMcF can probably never prove the negative. I guess that doesn't matter, since he appears to already be convinced.

I suspect btw that those who leave do so for varied reasons that may include:  1.  Can’t get into grad program.  2. Want a different experience. 3. Want a chance to play. 4. Like other schools options. 5. Dissatisfied with Stanford in some respect. 6. Dissatisfied with program/Shaw/position coach 7. Just want a change.

I suspect btw that those who leave do so for varied reasons that may include:  1.  Can’t get into grad program.  2. Want a different experience. 3. Want a chance to play. 4. Like other schools options. 5. Dissatisfied with Stanford in some respect. 6. Dissatisfied with program/Shaw/position coach 7. Just want a change. 

But these are all guesses. I have no real knowledge as to the whys. Same as the rest of you. (Who automatically assume it’s Shaw or the program).

I would swap Eboh and Harrington on those lists. Eboh finished the season as a starter again after Adeebo went out.  Harrington played a lot less than Eboh.  The potential 5th year that I haven't heard anything about is Pryts.  He was solid as a starter and is definitely needed to provide depth if not start at ILB next year. He participated in Senior Day. He isn't in the portal and he hasn't announced he is coming back. Anyone have any insight here?

Same.  And Lex, for those in the ??? category, here's what I know: (i) these guys all played and were expected to play meaningful minutes in 2020, (ii) football is a big (probably the biggest) part of Stanford life for these scholarship athletes, (iii) to leave Stanford University (not Podunk U by any means) for another school is likely to reflect at least some dissatisfaction with "the program."  

Maybe that's a leap too far, but it strikes me as a pretty reasonable position.

Far be it for me to agree with Teejers, but I think that while we cannot know what any particular individual's motivation is, we are not talking about one guy, we are talking about probably five guys for which there isn't an obvious explanation in terms of PT or academics for why they are leaving.  Sure, for any one player the explanation might be idiosyncratic (for example, a girlfriend graduating and getting a job somewhere else), but the overall pattern is concerning, especially since this is the second year that we have seen concerning departures (longer if you include ill-advised departures to the NFL).

One note I did think was interesting from Wilner was the idea that the offensive linemen's decision might have been linked to Little's decision to return (though both Hamilton and Hattis would have been guards, and Little would be locking down the LT spot), while Eboh's might have been linked to Adebo's (that's a better comparison, since if Adebo returns, the starters would probably be Adebo and Kelly, while if he declares for the NFL Eboh and Kelly would be the starters).  Of course, I have no idea whether that is pure speculation on Wilner's part (probably, given that I'm not sure that Little would have much influence on the guard position) or if he was onto something.
