That's why staff is going after 3+ DL in the '21 class (but really should've done so in '20...2 is treading water, but it should've been 3).
Overall, the roster balance actually seems quite close to ideal. To me, your 2 DB --> 2 DL conversion, swapping a WR for a QB, and swapping a FB for another OL (counting Stratford that would make 15, i.e. 3 deep) would fully balance the roster in terms of sheer position numbers.
Yeah, having 84 or 85 guys on scholarship is much better than we have had, but we should really be aiming for one or two of those guys to be former walk-one, not four or five. And yeah, the lack of defensive linemen is an ongoing issue. To be fair, this is generally a tough nut for Stanford to crack, as admissible defensive linemen are not exactly plentiful. But I really wish that adequate depth didn’t depend on redshirt seniors coming back. Hope the class of 2021 is as bountiful as you project.

IMO the distinction here should be if said former walk-ons are legitimate contributors (Brycen Tremayne caught 3 TDs, returned a blocked punt for a TD, and played a ton of STs for example...so he may as well be a scholarship WR), or if they just earned a scholarship due to other reasons/lack of other options (not gonna name names but you get the point).

Fox came in at 6'4" 240. I don't think it felt realistic for him to add 45 pounds. Plus he already showed flashes of being able to effectively rush the passer off the edge, which was (and still is) sorely needed on this defense.
Note that he's now listed at 252, which is a near-ideal weight for an OLB in a nickel-base defense. The NFL "EDGE" position is full of guys weighing anywhere from 250-265.
Back to the topic, Eboh has a CB to UCLA.

Agreed, though if by some miracle Speights returns AND displays the skills he showcased on his high school tape, then he would have a material impact. I was feeling confident that he would be a star at Stanford. I guess he never really had to learn how to read his blocks in high school.

He's a tough SOB, good ST player, very good pass blocker, and above all a fantastic teammate. Runs downhill well but isn't that patient behind his blocks and doesn't really have the wiggle. I can see him starting/getting more PT at a RB-needy program or a G5, somewhere that runs more of an old-school smashmouth offense (i.e. doesn't throw to their RBs much). UVA just lost 2 RBs to the portal and Wake loses their senior starting RB, so those could be attractive, or if he wants to be closer to home in TX there's always Bloomgren, SMU, UTEP/UTSA, and possibly Texas Tech.
Eboh has 2 recent CBs to UCLA, and most of the CBs have been accurate. Williams has a very very old CB (a month and a half ago, shortly after he entered the portal) to SMU.
I think we're also waiting to see if a couple guys are asked back for their 5th years as well, though that's more relevant to "2020 personnel" than "5th year decisions" (i.e. grad transfers) I suppose.

We need four scholarship spots. With, I'm guessing, Treyjohn Butler and J.J. Parson moving on (I have no inside information on that), that would mean that we would only need two of those in the portal to transfer (not counting Anthony Trinh, who is a walk-on), and only one if Dorian Maddox moved on as well (I think of Dorian Maddox is a contributor, however). But it may be that two or three are in the portal because they were not going to be coming back for a fifth year anyway.

Personally I think all the portal guys aren't returning. Speights and Eboh are both gone for sure. Not as sure on Williams and Swann but my gut feel is not good.
