The questions are all phrased like "Do you think it is a good idea or a bad idea to do each of the following without further testing for the coronavirus: Have students return to school?" Which leaves some wiggle room for what they mean by "without further testing", but the results are still interesting. Here's the good idea/bad idea split for what they asked:

Return to school: 14/85
Return to work: 32/65
Large groups at sporting events: 8/91
Open dine-in restaurants: 19/80

Also fully half of all households have had hours reduced or lost a job. Yikes.

If you're interested in responses broken down by demographics, it's in there. The only one that I saw that was interesting was men are way more likely than women to want to go back to work, but otherwise it looked pretty even (including among income, although the only breakdown was above/below 50k/year), but I wasn't looking at it all that deeply.

Most people would rather be poor and healthy than poor and sick?

My theory is people are more afraid of getting sick AND going bankrupt paying medical bills than they are of getting sick per se. This kind of data lends support to it. People losing money staying home, but prefer to stay away from others to avoid getting sick to possibly lose even more.

Congratulations American "health" care system!  You've managed to create a society willing to tank the economy to avoid medical bills!

For me, one of my greatest sources of hesitation is that we're still not certain what the long-term health effects are even among those who have recovered. Given the prospect of potentially permanent lung damage, I'm not eager to race back out to stimulate the economy, thankyouverymuch.

Thanks for the poll, interesting and relevant in this strange world of today, what with conflicting experts and a wide range of state policies.

I makes me wish we were one of those other nations that have a coherent national policy based on the best guesses of a few trusted experts. It's not for nothing that we have 4% of the world's population and 27% of its covid-19 deaths. And about four times more cases than any other nation.

I liked this paragraph in the recent New Yorker article comparing Seattle response to New York's: (emphasis is mine)

During the H1N1 outbreak of 2009—which caused some twelve thousand American deaths, infections in every state, and seven hundred school closings—Besser and his successor at the C.D.C., Dr. Tom Frieden, gave more than a hundred press briefings. President Barack Obama spoke publicly about the outbreak only a few times, and generally limited himself to telling people to heed scientific experts and promising not to let politics distort the government’s response.

Nobody I've read has a good rebuttal to the problem that opening things up one state at a time is like having a peeing section in a swimming pool. Coordinated national policy — and for that matter, coordinated world policy — makes a lot of sense. This pandemic is the black swan.

Yes, this is part of the equation and nobody seems to have a clue what that answer is. As noted before, I'm most curious about the impact on T-cells, and nobody knows that either.

Crazy to think that the most liberal ideas of Michael Yang and Bernie Sanders in 2019 are a reality in 2020 under President Trump.

People are getting money from the government.
