Rewatching the game this morning (in English). The refs are so darned inconsistent. A few seasons back, if you told me they were going to play mug'em ball and Missy was one of the refs, I'd take that as a bonus (even accounting for head-scratching whistles on batting ones eyelashes sto hard). I think that tends to be the case with any player who is aggressive, athletic, and generally big.  There is an expectation that such players aren't athletic enough to make some of the plays they make and therefore it "must have" been a foul.  I think Fran Belibi also gets hurt by phantom fouls.

The more I think about this game, the more I recognize that our women were warriors last night.  They faced down the adversity of being roughed up by an aggressive opponent in the face of inconsistent or non-existent ref'ing, red hot 3 point shooting by their opponent, and a road game in a hostile environment on a distracting custom painted court.  They lost a 15 point lead and found themselves 5 points down with just a few minutes to play.  But, they never stopped fighting.  They dove for loose balls.  They didn't whine about uncalled fouls.  They didn't lose their composure.  They kept fighting to the end.  This wasn't a beauty contest of a game, it was a battle.  And, our warriors prevailed.

Excellent point about the Oregon court.  Watching a TV game from there is enough to give anybody permanent migraines.  Especially when it's the Pac-12 famous "no-director" camerawork.  That court and Boise State's blue "Smurf Turf" are just plain wrong.

At the beginning of the season I thought Jones was the most indispensable player on the team.  Now I think it is Brink.  When Brink was guarding Sabally closely Sabally was intimidated into not taking a shot for fear it would be blocked.

It is SO much easier to prepare and implement the first scout of a weekend compared with the second scout.  Oregon had a gigantic advantage--not just with fresh legs--but with many more days to prepare to play us than we had to prepare to play them.

The more I think about it, I think our 2 losses can very much be linked to the incredibly adverse practice and preparation conditions before them.  Being on the road for 9 weeks is bad enough, but having a major reduction in practice time is particularly bad for a Vanderveer team that relies on intricate scouts, precise motion, and accurate shooting. 

We have won all but two games this year despite having the some of the most adverse conditions of any team in the nation.  Now that we are back at home again our practicing will go up and I expect we will begin to catch up with where Tara wants our team to be.  I think the future of this season is brighter than the games past since we are going to be able to prepare on an equal basis as our opponents from this point forward.  Our future opponents should be worried that we hit our low point long ago and will be consistently getting better from this point forward.  The performance of Kiana Williams is a clear indication of this.

So the sensible question is how the heck did we do it?  How did we win all of those games despite the wear and tear of travel and the lack of practice?  And the answer is quite simple:  we are actually and truly a more talented team than anyone we have faced.  Without that overwhelming talent we would have lost a lot more than 2 games.

This team has had a ton of adversity this season and given how little they were able to practice and how nomadic their life was during a period (the holidays) when they're used to the creature comforts of home, this is especially impressive. I also have to imagine the COVID protocols make every single aspect of life stressful and tiresome, from sharing hotel rooms, to getting meals, to traveling on buses and going through airport security, etc.

It's really easy to poo poo some sub-par performances, but Jones' stats line beyond the 5TO was still 4-9, 6R, 3A, 1S. If that's what constitutes a terrible game, I'll take it. We have a target on our backs every single game in the PAC-12 this season; teams didn't have the chance to get non-conference scalps, and we're an instant boost for any resume in need of a boost (see: Oregon State). All things considered, I'm terrifically impressed with how this team has handled this season; the teams of the past 5-6 years, after giving up a 15 point lead and trailing by 5 under 2 minutes, would have collapsed. These kids are resilient and they didn't blink for an instant.

And I'm so glad to have Kiana back to her old self. Ever since they announced the whole tourney will be in San Antonio (her hometown), I think she's had an extra bounce in her step. I'm sure she knows how big the opportunity will be for her in a few weeks' time.

Just watched recording of the game - impressive win by the Cardinal. A few things I noticed that I don’t think have been mentioned:
- Most if not all of the Ducks’ 8-0 run at the end of the first half came with Hull sisters on the bench
- Anna grabbed her wrist after being knocked down in the first half. Maybe that explains her absence in the second half
- Haley left the player she was guarding open for several open threes (at least 3 or 4 made) during Oregon’s run. Maybe further indication that Anna was dinged up.
- Paupau slipped earlier in the 3Q. Rebecca Lobo said in the same spot but I think the game ending turnover was closer to the baseline. Is the COVID protocol limiting floor mopping? That’s a home court DIS-advantage!

Lobo also said Oregon goes into a zone after every made basket. So it shouldn’t be a surprise! The Ducks do a good job of mixing up their zones. Seemed like Stanford attacked it better this game but were a bit unlucky getting shots to drop - progress!

To expand on my point above, there is another factor that has made our season more difficult than most--the collapse of CAL WBB this year.  Fans do not always think of this, but with Cal postponing 9 games and being completely noncompetitive in those it does play it gives our opponents the ability to concentrate all of their practices and scouts solely on us.  When we play Oregon and Oregon State, we split our attention for the week.  When Oregon and Oregon State plays us, they don't.  And likewise with all other opponents.

Simply put, we have had a much tougher road to travel than anyone else in the conference.
