So, Stanford baseball has to cancel this week due to COVID problems. I have no inside knowledge, but the lack of information suggests that some number of players have an infection while others may have to miss games because they were potentially exposed.
Just to refresh people's memory, those that have an infection can potentially play after 10 days (if all goes well). Those that were exposed may be back in (IIRC) 10 days as well, with negative tests. It used to be 2 weeks for those exposed, but I think the NCAA reduced to 10 days. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
The CDC allows for vaccinations once an infected person is out of the acute phase of the illness. The CDC recommends that those who have a known exposure wait until the end of their quarantine period.
I would think that the players should try for one of the mRNA vaccines, as those have been shown to have an 80% effectiveness (against asymptomatic or symptomatic COVID) after 2 weeks after the first shot (assuming the 2nd shot happens on schedule). The Janssen vaccine is 67% effective (against symptomatic COVID) after 2 weeks after the (only) shot. (Of course, today the only vaccines given are mRNA vaccines.)
There is a time element on the reduced chance of someone that had COVID from being reinfected, but a Danish study put the effectiveness of previously having COVID at 80% against getting it again.
(Note that a rough approximation would be that the effectiveness should be about the same whether measured against just symptomatic, or against both asymptomatic & symptomatic COVID. FYI, the CDC study found 87% of those found with COVID with every-week PCR test had traditional COVID symptoms. They didn't report the asymptomatic percentages separately for those vaccinated or not.)

There is plenty of supply of vaccine in Santa Clara County.
As far as I can tell, anyone in the country 18+ can get a vaccine if they have a car, if they are willing to go to a mass vaccination clinic, if they have schedule flexibility (to go on a weekday), if they are physically capable of waiting in line outside (which in CA is usually a beautiful 70 degree day), and if, if necessary, they can drive a little bit outside their immediate area.
I have checked the SCC vaccine signup website. Every day since at least Saturday in SCC, hundreds of sign up slots are available at one of the SCC mass vaccination clinics. You can check in the morning, afternoon or night, and any time you check, one if not most of the clinics have slots available within the next 4 days. Usually, appointments are available the next day.
Given the incredible job so many other Stanford teams did when vaccine wasn't even available yet, I am disappointed in the baseball team, in the AD, and the university.

First time poster, long time reader!!!!! I had heard that they had 2 tests early last week, and after their trip to ASU, had an additional 2, so Dr's pulled the plug on this week. I am still not sure how this will hurt moving forward because this was a series they could have swept from U of W. After this, it should be bubble x10 time. There is no social life going on, just school and ball!!!!

Just got off the phone with my kid, who is a starter on the team.
Here are the facts: after UCLA, two tested positive. Both are now negative.
After ASU, two more tested positive. The team tested again today and are awaiting results. If there are no more positives, the team should play on Wednesday.
A majority, if not all, of the team has had their first dose of the vaccine.

After today's game versus Pacific, the remainder of Stanford's regular season schedule is as follows:

3x @ Oregon (#8)
3x vs Oregon State (#28)
Stanford currently sits at #22 in RPI. And if anyone is keeping track, there are 293 teams listed in the NCAA baseball RPI rankings.
At the moment, it's the top of the 5th, with Stanford ahead 7-4.

Was only able to watch the final inning, but I assume was as ugly as the bottom of the eighth, when Pacific broke a 12-12 tie and pushed across 3 against Grech and co.
I won't go through all of the pitching stats, but Palisch gave up 4 earned runs in 1 inning and Grech gave up 4 earned runs in 1 2/3 inning.
Stanford was up 11-6 going into the bottom of the 7th, so this one is going to hurt for a bit. Damn Covid...

To be successful the rest of the way, the pitching will need to match the offense. We cannot win every game 12-10. That's asking too much of the bats. It's time for some of our mound talent to step up and help.

Since you had mentioned that your son is a starter on this team, I am sure you gave him an earful about yesterday's loss. Hard to come back from a long layoff and be back to where you were before it. The fact that they can still score runs at this pace is a good sign. Pitching was always going to be an issue with the shortened fall. Plus some of these new pitchers who are freshman came from their Junior year of HS to the Pac due to missing out on the 2020 season.
Covid did not help, and now these players with have to still stay loose but also be weary of the position they are in due to not getting the U of W series back.
Stanford was never projected to host a regional. I don't think Esquer was banking on that this year. After last years slow start. I am sure getting this team some regional experience is what he was shooting for as the main goal for this team.

The main goal for a team should always be the championship, no matter how bad the team actually is.

My son is in 8th grade, although he is a starter on his 14U Little League and club teams.
I have a hard time imagining that Esquer was not *at least* aiming to host a regional. That's been a regular occurrence for Stanford over the past few decades, in fact 33 times over the past 40 years:
1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019
If there's one thing people have learned in Berkeley, it's that you can't put "Cal football" and "Rose Bowl" in the same sentence. The words just don't fit. You'd be better off linking "covered wagons" with "Mars travel." (Bruce Jenkins, Cal '70, SF Chronicle, Nov. 11, 2017)
