1. Not trading 3 first round picks and drafting Davis Mills #12.
2. Trading 3 first round picks to draft Justin Fields, Trey Lance, Mac Jones or Zach Wilson #3.
I don't know what would be more reckless or risky, but I do know that the optics of taking Mills at #12 as the QB of the future would be so unpopular that the Niners couldn't do it even if they wanted to do so. Mills may turn out to be a starting NFL QB, but right now the public perception isn't leaning that way. It would be arguable that the Niners could get him in a later round and "wasting" a #1 pick on speculation is bad business. Going that route just isn't possible.
If you don’t have guts, you don’t deserve to be running a pro sports franchise.
Look at 1-12 as it existed prior to the Niners moving up. There were about 7 teams ahead of them that potentially wanted QB’s. And 3or 4 behind them that did. By jumping to 3, Niners control as best they can who they get. Had they sat as 12, the likelihood is all 5 would have been gone. And the clear consensus is there is a significant drop off after 5. Sure, the Niners could have waited. Then they would have seen 4 QBs come off quick. Someone like Carolina would have jumped to 3. Atlanta is then in great position to either pick a QB if they liked one, or trade. (Although, good chance they take Pitts) Denver also would have picked a QB. At 9. And Detroit a good possibility at 7. Plus NE at 15 was a threat to move. So.... had they waited, and only Jones was left, there still would have been a high price to move up. If they think Jones is all that, moving to 3 makes sense. By doing it early, they get a lot of time to evaluate.
Still, I hope they pick Lance.....
No way you draft Mills at 12. I’m a big Mills fan. But his injury history is too much to pick him at 12. 30 maybe. So the real question is would it have been better to move down and pick Mills.

They try to be scientific but it's really a crapshoot and something to hype in the off season. I try not to get excited until I expose my last shot of each season.
There are a few too many franchises that are identified as good at the draft after selecting one or two 4th-7th rounders that turn into all-pros. Most seem incapable of replicating that type of success over time, so I agree that to win by using draft science seems like a questionable strategy.
However, there are a few franchises out there that are consistently bad at getting their picks to come close to expectations. The NY Jets top that list.
Recently the NFL has soured on USC QBs as their hype and headlines coming out of college have not really resulted in consistent winning and/or Super Bowl appearances. So THAT Draft science I am happy to support. ;)
I think the next SC QB to play in the SB will be the first..... Same for tOSU I believe.
Stanford should have had 3. But F——-ng Preston Riley.....
