Davis Mills a 1st round pick? No, 3rd

His QB coach is so heavily quoted that the article almost seems planted! But Davis certainly crushed his pro day and has a high ceiling.
All I know from watching the two pro days, Mills' day was decidedly better than Jones'
Jamarcus Russell. Putting a whole lot of stock in how someone performs on pro-day seems quite silly to me. Unless, of course, they stink it up and can’t hit the broadside of a barn.

Rogers seems like somewhat of a jerk. I get he was loyal to Tedford But Cal worked out pretty well for him.

Mills may turn out to be a starting NFL QB, but right now the public perception isn't leaning that way. It would be arguable that the Niners could get him in a later round and "wasting" a #1 pick on speculation is bad business. Going that route just isn't possible.
1. Not trading 3 first round picks and drafting Davis Mills #12.
2. Trading 3 first round picks to draft Justin Fields, Trey Lance, Mac Jones or Zach Wilson #3.
If you take a player high in the draft who is widely expected to high in the draft, and the player is a bust, the perception will be that it was the player's fault for not living up to the hype. If you take a player high in the draft above where they were projected, and the player is a bust, the perception is that it will be the GM's fault for mis-evaluating the talent.
You are probably better off trading the 12th pick down and picking Mills lower in the draft.

First year of Lynch Shanahan, they lost their first nine games, but six of those losses were by three points or less. Garoppolo comes in and wins five straight, he gets a big contract. Year two, he gets ACL injury, they go 4-12 -- but they still have talent. Year three, they're in the Super Bowl and come very close to winning it. Year four, Garoppolo is a gimp and they go 6-10 again.
So they've had three bad years out of four, and yes, Baalke left it a mess and they had bad luck, but now it's year five...and they have six year contracts. They can't build for the future. They can't take chances. They need the most pro-ready QB now, so, they're going to swallow hard and pretend that Mac Jones is Drew Brees.
Welcome to the Mac Jones era. Be interesting to see how Fields and Lance turn out.
Maybe he is the second coming of Brees. Who the F knows. Certainly not us. Shanahan is a systems guy. Jones fits his system. Let’s give the kid a chance before we trash him.
Where’s the fun in that?
Actually, I think Jones will be pretty good.

Because Mills didn't have a lot of games under his belt, the pro day was probably pretty important. Unfortunately for whoever drafts him, his pro day won't answer the question of how durable he would be in the pros.
Then again, few people would have predicted that Andrew Luck would struggle with injuries based on his experience at Stanford. Sometimes you just have bad luck (though your luck is likely to be much worse if you have a sieve for an offensive line).

The last part of that statement is the most important part. I actually hope Da Bearsss don't draft Mills in the second round if he's there. They should draft OL with each of their first two picks.

For what it's worth, Davis Mills has been considered the best QB available since Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, Fields, and Mac Jones all went in the front half of the first round.

Never so happy to be wrong. Love the Trey Lance selection for the Niners.
Looks like the year of the quarterback. Lawrence (#1), Wilson (#2), Lance (#3), Fields (#11), Jones (#15). NFL.com prospect tracker ranks Trask (Fla St.) next, then Mills.

I think Mills will be the next QB taken.
Is KJ Costello projected to be drafted? The move to MSU, beyond his first game, did not result as he had wished. I hope he's at least signed as a free agent.
The QB who I think will be a steal this draft is Ian Book from USB.

I love the pick too, because I don't think Da Bearsss would have traded up to get Lance. A reversal of 2017. I think Lance is going to be a bust.

Whoever was advising KJ made a humongous mistake. What happened at MSU was foreseeable. I said when he transferred there that it was a big mistake.

He would have played two games. Of course, he didn't know Mills would have been held out due to a false positive COVID test.

I believe he had an offer from Washington. Fool's gold with Leach, but the name Costello is now in the SEC record books.

Mills to the Redskins, or Steelers in the second round or Falcons in the 3rd?

If it was Leach in year 3 maybe. But MSU was a running team the year before. None of the players were picked by Leach. Complete system change. O-line has to learn whole new system. Year one was bound to be a cluster.
