T&F Olympic Trials

We're going, will be looking for the Stanford entries in particular. Very excited to see the new stadium (and it won't have a weird floor, like Matt Knight, thank goodness). We've been to every track and field trials since 1972, so glad not to miss this one.

Bummer, no Jenna Gray (former Stanford WVB player), in the javelin. Maybe playing professional volleyball in Germany took away from the needed time to train.

Haha, me too! I was 6 months old at the time, though (we lived in Toronto, where I was born).

If you like field events, and I really do, TV has been pretty frustrating over the years, but with streaming, it's getting better. Our main emphasis has always been Track and Field, and since 1996, we've been to every women's basketball gave the US has played in. We've always gone for the entire time of the game. Only been to one winter (Vancouver), but for summer Olympics, Montreal was the 1st for us, then missed Moscow for obvious reasons, and been to every one after that. But we never did have plans for Japan, so will be seeing that the way we planned to all along, via TV, though a year late.

Does it really make sense for some of these athletes to try to double when you basically have to run the events back to back with no real rest? The women's 1500/5000 is the best example. Cranny is going to pretty much give everything she has to qualify in the 1500. The chance of making the field in both events seems mostly in the realm of the impossible. I am going to be very interested in seeing how Heymach does in the 1,500. A lot probably depends on the pace. If the pace is slow her kick might enable her do do well.

That double is not a problem if your name is Hassan. She just ran a 3:53 1500 in Europe. She won't have to run in a trials, either.
Purrier will have the same dilemma as Cranny. Both have a chance to make the team in both or either event. Especially now that Houlihan is banned and Rowbury is injured. I think Cranny is better vs the world in the 5000 and Purrier in the 1500. Those are the events I think they should be running.
My other big question is whether Athing Mu will double in the 400 and the 800. The schedule is perfect for the double. The final of the 400 is 3 or 4 days prior to the heats of the 800. She is ranked first in the USA in both events this year. The 400 will be competitive. Only Wilson should be able to challenge her in the 800.

Heymach advances to the semis with a 4:12 in the 1500
Cranny and Mehre next heat and Donughu in the third heat.
Allman and Pierson on the Discus qualifying now
Cranny didn’t run as the 5K semis in less than 2 hours
Mehre advances also 4:13
Donughu advances 4:12.16.
Truth is almost all advanced. The trials are run like the Olympics thus the heats with so many advancing

Yeah 24 runners advanced. I think there were a total of 27 runners, 9 runners in each of three heats, right?
It should be the heats where the focus is to not get tripped up but the runners for the most part were bunched up through most of race.

A few more than that but close Palo Alto
Of course the top runner disq for dopping
A couple of others choosing a longer race
Allman the top qualifier by 27 feet. Pierson did not move on in the Discus

Grant Fisher runs a smart 10k, finishes second in only his second race at the distance, on his way to Tokyo.

Athing Mu skips the 400, even though she is fastest in the USA. Likely will be on the 4x400 assuming she makes the team in the 800.
Purrier ran the 1500. Without Houlihan she is the best in the USA. No 5000.
That was a no effort 10000 for Fisher. He was the only runner not out of breath at the end. On the other hand, he really has no kick at the end of his races.
Fraser and Cranny advance in the 5000. Fraser also a runner with no kick. Apparently Cranny is doubling with the 10000.

I would have been surprised if Mu did not go pro. There was a lot of talk...
I guess "no kick" is harsh. I'm thinking of the guys he is going to face in the Olympics who can run the last lap in 50-52 seconds. He also lost a couple of cross country NCAA's at the end to the guy from Wisconsin, IIRC.
