Isn’t that school across the bay supposed to be Cal, Berkeley, or UC Berkeley but never the combination Cal Berkeley?

I was under the impression that Cal Berkeley is something said by misinformed sports announcers and east coast types. Much like Southern Cal.

I have changed the UC names to the full description used by WSJ. I did not add the geographic city identifiers to Michigan, UNC, Illinois, Washington, and Purdue, since I doubt any of us are confused about which campus is implied.

Meh.  I mean, it's great to have a lofty ranking, but it is more important to find the right fit in the school and make the most out of your experience.

Sticking with the WSJ/THE College Rankings, I like seeing where schools that aren't P5 but are still in Division I are ranked.

1 Harvard
4 Yale
6 Brown
8 Princeton
11 Cornell
12 Penn
13 Dartmouth
16 Columbia
18 Rice (the highest non-P5, non-Ivy in Division I)
32 Georgetown
40 UC Davis (the highest public non-FBS Division I)
42 Boston University
43 UC San Diego
47 United States Military Academy
50 Barnard College (because they compete athletically in consortium with Columbia)
52 Colgate (hey, we're playing them in football next year)
61 Lehigh
63 University of Richmond
66 Davidson
72 GWU
74 Santa Clara
75 United States Naval Academy
76 UC Santa Barbara
77 Lafayette
78 William & Mary (hey, we were supposed to play them in football last year)
81 Bucknell
86 Northeastern (which is apparently acquiring Mills College in Oakland)
87 UC Irvine
90 Loyola Marymount
91 UIC
94 SMU
96 Pacific

It would have been nice for the UC regents to encourage development of football programs half a century ago on more of their campuses so that our best conference expansion options today were not in the catchall 401-500 category.

And here are a few other schools of interest.  Of note, UCLA now leads Berzerkeley.  UCSB has leapfrogged UCSD.  Ten years ago, UCSD had a clear lead, then there was distance to Davis, Irvine and Santa Barbara.  And UC-Santa Cruz, which rose prominently between 2005 and 2011 and threatened to join UCD, UCI and UCSB as Top 50 schools, has fallen to last among the UC's.  And I included my alma mater, now considered about Ohio State level...

Well, Mick, we like you more than the average tOSU grad (I also get the sense you are more professionally successful as well), which I guess goes to show how much these rankings matter.

I never really knew how much tOSU was loathed until I spent four years in Detroit and Ann Arbor.  Michigan-ites seem to believe tOSU fans are about 10x more toxic than Cal fans.
