I liked Matt Squeri’s list better, though a couple of names overlapped. The Athletic list is heavy on coaches with a Stanford connection (Bloomgren, Mason, Walters, Roman), which has some advantages but I think is also too limiting.

No one will accept the job without knowing more precisely what Stanford is willing to do on NIL and transfers. My guess is that is why Shaw was discussing it with administration last week. So we should know a lot more about what the administration is willing to do not only when the new hire is announced, but when the new policies that come with him are announced.

Deion would be spectacular. Does he have a degree?
Brennan and Taylor understand the area but have little or no experience recruiting nationally. They could bring in a consultant, someone like a modern George Rush who knew just about every high school coach in the country.

Agree, Hambly has shown himself to be a great coach. Like Shaw, he inherited a ton, and delivered championships with them. Then, when that team was disassembled, he has rebuilt the current team from scratch, and should be a title contender next year.

yes, originally florida state, then went back and completed his degree at talladega in 2020.

I don't know if I've ever seen a more opposite to what Stanford is all about suggestion for a Head Coach than Deion Sanders.
And just the suggestion of such a name suggests Stanford would be "big game hunting" for a Head Football coach. I just don't see the congruity with Stanford and how it is perceived, and having a football program that would be paying top dollar for a proven Head Football Coach.
Before a hire is made, Stanford had to decide what it wants from its football program. Does it want to be a playoff contender? Does it want football to be a revenue generator? Does Stanford want its football program to raise the profile of the university to Joe Public? Does Stanford want to fill the Stanford Stadium with paying customers? Where does this focus on a Big 10 invite come from. It is not happening anytime soon and would remove a positive differentiator for Stanford. 5 of the top 16 ranked teams are currently in the PAC-12 and 4 of them will be in the new PAC-10.
