I’ve got no problem with that. Indeed, except for the fact that it will in all likelihood have blown over by the time next football season rolls around, the current kerfuffle involving MTL would be an obvious target, particularly given the name of the journal involved… :-) A good double entendre should never go to waste. Of course, the chance of that show getting the necessary sign off from above would be precisely zero.

I don't have time to read the entire thread. I'm amazed it's onto the 4th page. 

I find this to be a nothing burger. No one can laugh at themselves anymore. Everyone takes offense at everything. 

The band lives for this type of reaction. Always has. Hope they are aware that they got a bunch of old farts frazzled. 

If the band can't live on the edge it isn't LSJUMB anymore.

I am a season ticket holder, and I clap for them, and sometimes LOL, so I alone  disprove the claim that “no one claps for them.”

If there was a little blurb in the media kit that explained that the band is, and has been, a non-traditional scatter band for decades, I think it could help. Some audience members may not know that scatter bands arose as a countermovement to traditional bands with their traditional band music, marching in earnest, self-serious formation, while scatter bands played rock music, and “scattered” instead of marching, often with humorous themes (or attempts at humor). I think if more people knew that scatter bands brought rock and roll to football stadiums, more people would “get” what they are about. The AD blurb could also explain that LSJUMB halftime shows are student-written, student performed humor skits that were created within the last week, and usually do not reflect the views of the university or athletic dept.

I think scatter bands “look worse” because college football is a much bigger business now, with larger audiences and higher production values, and even traditional bands now play rock music, so it’s not obvious what scatter bands were a reaction to.

You could argue the AD doesn’t need to publish an explanatory blurb, but TV game commentators sound shocked to see the band. It’s like they assume that Stanford, a research powerhouse, “must” have a very serious band. They might also assume that Stanford must have a very dignified and serious entrance during graduation, and a very traditional motto in Latin.

That is why they may need "explaining". Yes, putting together a performance that doesn't require rapt attention by the crowd to be appreciated is much more difficult, but that used to be the norm. If you still have some ties to the LSJUMB leadership, I think you should have them read this thread.  There is some good, honest feedback here that may help them evolve.   There are some high quality musicians in the band (some that play with the Stanford symphony, wind symphony, etc...), but agree that there aren't enough of them.  Just as there aren't the same number of students at our games.   These are different times and many of these kids are heavily focused on other pursuits.   The same can be said of Stanford fans in general, as even when we were a top 20 team with a somewhat nicer stadium than the "Old Lady," we still weren't filling the seats.  

As for musical taste, I do think it's a generational issue as well.  Parents generally don't like their kids musical leanings.  My grandmother used to chide my mother about hers and my mother did the same to her kids.  I admit, I'm sometimes challenged by my kids musical tastes.   As someone stated earlier, perhaps on this issue there is a little bit (or a lot) of we are turning into the old farts we snickered at when we were undergrads.  I say let them have Fun and find their own Stanford way.

On the scale of things, it certainly does seem like a nothing burger. 

There was never a time that "people" thought the band was great/funny who have turned on them now. I have seen letters from the 1970s/80s stating "the band is a disgrace", "I'm never donating another penny", "band members are going to rot in Hell", "anyone allowing the band to exist is going to rot in Hell", and one very energetic fellow who was "on [his] way to the university right now to bulldoze the entire place to the ground" (he seemed to have taken a wrong turn somewhere or has a very slow bulldozer).

By the way, Mitt Romney liked the band's joke from 2004 about marriage between a man and a woman and a woman and a woman. He used the line in 2005.

Mostly I am surprised anybody gets offended by band half time shows because most of the time I cannot figure out what they are they are trying to do or to say. 

This show was approved by somebody outside the band. If there is a problem, they should be taking the heat as much as the band itself. It's a little tough to tell the band on Thursday that everything is fine, then on Monday that they're getting suspended.

The band has become smaller over the past several decades and as they hunt for members the average musical ability has dropped. My understanding is that there are simply fewer students at Stanford that have played instruments. There may not be much the band itself can do about this. And, much as I lament the size/sound dropoff, I don't think Stanford should craft admissions policies specifically for the LSJUMB. 
For this reason red vest (indoor/basketball) band has always been much better musically. I suspect that with a smaller pool of musicians the contrast is even larger now.

sorry, byu, "be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth" comes from genesis. that is most definitely NOT a particularly mormon text. as i'm sure the members of this board know (though stanford administration seems not to), the old testament is used by several major religions, but if it belongs to any one religion, it's judaism.

to me the use of the phrases references religiosity in general, not the mormons in particular, and implies that gay and lesbian couples have right to marry and to be blessed. i strongly approve of the message.

i'm disappointed that stanford and the band caved to this appalling sectarianism and mis-attribution.
