Karlie and Alanna are both great examples as their first few years in the WNBA were quite underwhelming. The difference in athleticism and physicality between the WNBA and the college women's game is massive.
I think Lexie has a chance to stick, largely because of her defense. The Fever have just started using her as their defensive stopper against the top players in the world (e.g. Brianna Stewart, Rhyne Howard) and she's been doing pretty well so far. On a team that is defensively putrid, she's actually pretty valuable even though she's not shooting well. Also, last year Lexie's offense kicked in down the stretch where she scored in double figures in 3 of her last 4 games. At least she's proven she can put some points up.
Haley is another story. Her deficiencies that bothered Stanford fans over the years are glaring in the WNBA. The Dream ran her at point yesterday and it was rough. 3 awful turnovers in 10 minutes and she struggled to do much against the opposing guard. She's not a great defender and not a shooter. She made bank in college attacking the basket and finishing over smaller guards and even some bigs, but those shots will all be contested or even blocked in the league. Wish it wasn't so as I want the best for her, but it doesn't look good at this point.
Also have wished the best for Haley, but in retrospect, I think she peaked by the end of her sophomore year, but never developed beyond that. Agree; the WNBA is a much different 'beast' than college ball.
And just like that, Haley comes out with her best pro game yet. She scored 13 pts, going from 5/9 from the field including 1/1 from downtown(!) with 3 rebounds and 2 assists in 19 minutes off the bench against Chicago.
Conversely, on the other side in this game, Alanna Smith had her worst game so far this season, finishing with just 3 pts on 1/5 shooting, though she did grab 6 rebounds.
