Atlanta has more limited resources than some of the big market teams like LA and GS, plus Fields came into his role in December 2022, after the team had a disastrous off-season. The team was in salary dump mode, and Fields always stood to take some blame for the predictable dip in performance. Things turned out as I expected, but I don't think Fields did a bad job with the lot he was given.
Also, if the organization was thinking of making a change, then this off-season is a good time to do it. They have several expiring contracts that they could parlay into a new piece to help with the somewhat rebuilt roster. It's a good thing to let the new President of Operations make the choice that might significantly influence the team's success in the near future.

I would quibble on the resources part of the equation. NBA has a functional hard cap in the second apron era. No team is truly limited by their ability to spend on players unless the owner is extremely cheap.
Atlanta's issues stemmed from the fact they had a roster built around Trey young, who while a great offensive player, limits your ceiling through his style of play and lack of defense.
. . . .
Traded Deandre hunter for a limited return, though i didn't mind this deal as i thought he was over-rated/over priced in any case.
