Peter you're an awesome fan. Sadly when the coach drives away 7 players and the frosh aren’t what Stanford is used to this is the result. It’s going to be a long season

First, the players I saw are not very quick or athletic (with the exception of Shay and Nora). If our post players are getting driven around and beaten to the hoop by guards from the Big West, the faster and quicker ACC guards will give us a lot of problems. This is a much less talented team than Stanford has had in a long time.
Second, this group of players hasn't played together very much and it shows. Stanford has 5 returners (including only 1 starter), 3 transfers from different programs, and four freshmen. The new players are used to different systems and it will take time for them to gel together. This was very obvious tonight, especially in the first half.
Third, this group isn't playing quickly. Santa Barbara played much more quickly than we did on offense., while we looked laborious with the ball - and that goes straight to the coaching.
During the first half, the offense looked disjointed. The second half was better but when we got close at the end, We reverted to the very simple "throw it into the post" offense from last year and Santa Barbara was able to defend it.
I think Coach Paye needs to realize the type of players she has and find a freer offense for them instead of the structured offense she's been using.

I play a game with myself after each game and predict what is going to be said in the post-game presser. Did they just blow it off? How am I going to keep my own streak alive?
It's really frustrating that we didn't see everyone get significant minutes. And Hailee is going to be exhausted by the time we get to the conference season.
No complaints on defense, but I can't believe that with months to prepare we are not using an offense that would allow these players to give it their best, um, shot (and, maybe, not throw up airballs as the shotclock winds down).

We gave up 23 points in the 4th Q to UCSB and lost by 9.

We scored 19 in the fourth. We were fouling down the stretch and UCSB hit their free throws (9-10 in the last 2 minutes).

As poorly as Stanford played in their exhibition win over Pacific, this was far worse. UC Santa Barbara controlled this game from the very beginning, creating mismatches on offense that led to multiple drives and layups. Yes, UCSB was quicker on both sides of the court. They created 20 Stanford turnovers to just 11 themselves. UCSB had 12 steals to Stanford's zero. Even with the antiquated offense, I saw confusion among Stanford's perimeter players who kept yelling instructions to others, all of which made Santa Barbara's defense even more effective.
I continue to be disappointed with Alex. She missed countless bunnies under the basket and should have scored 20. I have not seen Alex develop much since last season. With all her length and talent, she should be dominating. She is 'soft' putting up easy shots, and not making them. Having said that, I am perplexed at how Paye is using her. Early in the 2nd. half, Eschmeyer posted low and found herself relatively open. On three consecutive possessions, one pass from a teammate went way over her head; the next pass was too low and got intercepted; the third was too wide to the left; clearly 3 mistakes by her teammates, and yet Paye benched Alex and kept her out for a long time. On two occasions, I watched Paye lecturing Alex about something. For a coach who said (during ACC media day) that she was going to give her players more freedom, she is keeping Eschmeyer on a short leash while other players are making mistakes, but allowed to stay in the game. I have no idea what's going on.
If last night's fiasco was designed to be a 'teaching experience' for KP's players (and winning was not important, because it was an exhibition), I'll give Paye a pass on her strange substitutions at critical times during the game when Stanford got to within 4 points of UCSB. But if the goal was to win the game, KP was totally outcoached by Renee Jimenez.
