ZZ Ward (ZZ short for Szuszanna) with Put The Gun Down, which I believe was loosely based on a Dolly Parton song.  First, it's a great, bluesy song.  Second, ZZ has an awesome voice.  Third, she's hot.  And fourth, with lyrics like "Her face is young, she must taste sweet; she drops her panties to her knees" it turns me on every time.

In the summer of 2012, immediately after its release, "I Love It" was tapped by MTV as the opening theme for the Jersey Shore spinoff Snooki & JWoww; but that wasn't enough to get radio's or iTunes buyers' attention. Six months later, Lena Dunham gave the song an even better showcase in the second season of Girls, devoting nearly a full minute of slow-mo, coke-fueled club dancing to the song. That did the trick, and "I Love It" finally debuted on the Hot 100.

Ironically, I first heard the song on that podcast.

When I get a chance, I will try to incorporate all the songs mentioned into the Hulk playlist and rechristen it the cardboard playlist.

The impetus started on January 4 when I read a Facebook post by a woman whom I love named Susan.  She paid small tribute to Phil Everly, who had died the day before. by mentioning how much she hated being awakened each morning of her youth to the Everly Brother’s “Wake Up Little Susie.”  “It was not my genre,” she wrote. 

I responded long, writing hat the Everly Brothers created rock and roll.  The Beatles copied them purposefully, as did The Beach Boys and then the Hollies, Bee Gees, Turtles, Buckinghams, and Crosby Stills.  They brought harmony particularly but also country and folk, to popular music.  (And Buddy Holly invented the group, by the way, by adding the drummer and bass guitar.)  Almost sixty years later, no one tries to sing like Elvis Presley but you hear Everly Brothers everywhere.

brobdingnagian like to hear Publius salute the Ronettes.  Ronnie Spector’s duet with Eddie Money of “Be My Baby/Take Me Home Tonight” ranks among my ten favorite songs ever and is a brilliant melding of attitudes and voices.  These two songs always should have been sung as duets.  Plus when the video for it was made, Ronnie could still strut and saunter and get under your skin, just as she did John Lennon’s.  Yow.

And Publius, I will give another chance to the earlier Killers’ stuff/  I love Brandon Flowers and it does seem unlikely that they could have created three great songs and nothing else.

I will add an unexpected choice as All-Time Great: Dion’s “Yo Frankie.”  Lou Reed once said that Dion created cool.  Looks that way from here, too.  “King of the New York Streets” makes my all time top 50 and “I’ve Got To Get To You” cracks my top five.  Dion was yearning for a woman at this time and it’s palpable. 

A big historical note:  Dion was part of the Winter Dance Party tour that famously claimed Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper en route to the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa.  Dion would have died in that crash too.  But when he heard the plane fare for the flight on that Beachcraft Bonanza to Davenport was $36, he realized that was exactly what his parents paid for their monthly rent in the Bronx.  Dion insisted that could not go and told Valens to take his seat.  Valens then won the seat in a coin flip and hours later, the music died.

Ronnie Spector’s duet with Eddie Money of “Be My Baby/Take Me Home Tonight” ranks among my ten favorite songs ever and is a brilliant melding of attitudes and voices.  These two songs always should have been sung as duets.  Plus when the video for it was made, Ronnie could still strut and saunter and get under your skin, just as she did John Lennon’s.  Yow.

In less than 30 days (February, 9, 2014), the 50th anniversary of the Beatles first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show will take place. 

I remember watching it but I did not realize at the time the profound influence they would have on American culture.  Wow, fifty years...............

American culture?  WORLD culture.  All four sides of my daughter's family are from the other side of the world, and we have a multi-generational love for the Fab Four.  My daughter was shaking it to "You're Gonna Lose That Girl" before she could walk.

Chuck Klosterman wrote an interesting essay about "rated" music.  Basically it's easy and lazy to call a band overrated or underrated.  What is more interesting is "rated" bands, meaning the bands that are regarded exactly correctly.  The Beatles finished 4th on that list, and this is what he wrote.  They invented rock (as opposed to rock & roll) and wrote all the best songs.  They are universally acknowledged as the greatest band.  Rated exactly right.  As a corollary to this, I will point out that very few people will acknowledge them as their favorite band, probably because it says nothing about you as an individual.  As Phoebe from Friends tries to connect with her birth mother, she's amazed that they both love the Beatles and puppies.  If you asked me who my favorite band is I'd tell you New Order/Joy Division.  If I got stranded on a desert island and could only bring one band's catalog: that would be the Beatles.
