Actually, my children are Asian. My wife is Japanese. Her family is from Hawaii, so there's a strong Asian influence. Speaking of tea, my latest toy is a small thermos with a filter that allows me to bring my loose leaf tea to work. And because it was made in Japan, the tea stays steaming hot all day long. It's amazing.

Kettleman's City.  Only place to stop.  But I have been taking 101 for the last two years.  I'll trade 45 minutes longer (based upon multiple tests) for a MUCH friendlier on the eyes drive.

The search for the ultimate mountain-top experience in something as simple as coffee would amuse my depression era grandparents to no end.  Of course paying more than a dime per cup would also amuse them.  They thought my generation complicated the simplest pleasures.

Still needing to read 80,000 pages (well, it felt like it) for Western Civ frosh Fall quarter, I decided to take No Doze for my first experiment with caffeine.  Discovered right then and their that I am wired backwards, because I promptly fell asleep.  Woke up about 8 am.  To this day, I can have a double espresso right before bedtime and sleep soundly.

That could come in handy.  Does anything (legal) get you wired?

I use a very basic drip coffee maker. It's a Technivorm Moccamaster KBGT741:

This machine is easy to clean, allows you to stir during brewing, allows you to control the rate of flow out of the filter as needed and delivers the water at the proper temperature (just below boiling). By slowing down the flow and giving it an occasional stir with the back end of the measuring spoon, you can get all the flavor of a french press without the sediment. If you duck tape the carafe sensor button, you can brew straight into a Contigo cup or other device. The carafe that comes with it is double wall stainless. No glass. I originally got this machine because of the unbreakable carafe. My wife had tremors and could not deal with glass. This machine doesn't have any fancy timers. It just heat's the water to the proper temperature and delivers great taste.

For  a grinder, I use a Capresso Infinity burr grinder:

Coffee beans are a matter of taste. I would stay away from Starbucks which tends to burn it's coffees. For inexpensive decent beans, you can get Peet's Major Dickason at Costco. Make sure it's the whole beans. I use this for my work day coffee. Try different roast levels from your local artisanal roaster. In the Bay Area, Blue Bottle and Philz are decent but expensive. I also like Weaver's, which is available at Whole Foods, Jackson Liquors (Lafayette, CA) and on the web at http://www.weaverscoffee.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=3. Weaver was master roaster at Peet's before they moved to the automated plant. I like his independent work better. My favorite is the Guatemala Antigua.
