I'm skeptical that this will work. It seems to me every time we see press coverage of a QB changing his throwing motion, it rarely seems to change much (in terms of production). Happy to be positively surprised.

They wouldn't work on it if it wasn't going to help. And I guess this means Hogan could stay another year...if he tightens up that throw and can get the short/intermediate game going, then the offense should really click.

Ha. In Shaw I trust. Except during this last Rose Bowl...I was not in a very trusting mood at halftime.

I admit I am surprised he is working to change his throwing motion at this time - but it reads to me in the Fitzgerald article more like tuning fine points rather than reworking top to bottom.
I hope the downside would be just that we don't see a difference, rather than messing him up.
That blog also included this, "Depending on how he does this year, Hogan could come back for his final year of eligibility in 2015."
Unless he does REALLY poorly, returning in 2015 doesn't just depend on how he does this year.

The thing with changing mechanics is that it will often work for a period of time (if it works), but then when under pressure or in tense situations, the player tends to revert to their natural motion.
If it can be shortened slightly, it would be a big gain for the short/intermediate passing game which can require a quicker read and release

I think the posts in this thread are missing the point.
According to the article, Kevin Hogan assessed his performance and concluded he needed to improve:
1. His release by shortening it
2. His footwork in certain situations
Now, he may have been advised by his coaches to do this or he may have arrived at the conclusion himself, but it really doesn't matter. The point is Hogan is already good and he wants to get even better. That's a great thing to see from a team leader. Is he an elite QB in the making? The jury is still out on that, but at minimum it won't be because he thought he knew everything and couldn't stand to improve. It's just a bit puzzling to see how many people see downside to someone analyzing his performance and wanting to take steps to improve. And frankly the skepticism that Hogan can improve the things he's been working on improving, is a bit surprising.
