Good bye, Meyer. No other place could induce prolonged napping while trying to study like you.
If I had a dollar every time I was distracted, I wish I had some ice cream.
The lights go out at UGLY

Wait, wasn't Meyer the home of the 24-hour study room? Where do all the desperate souls go now to study after the libraries close?

Well, I was close. Amazing how 35 years can cloud the memories. I remember there was a signup sheet for terminal access, and once you got one you could stay on as long as you wanted so long as you didn't fall asleep. If you did, a bearded Comp Sci major that smelled like he hadn't bathed in weeks would tap you on the shoulder and tell you to give up your terminal.Â
Put a glide in your stride and a dip in your hip.

That bearded Comp Sci grad student was probably K.Kuddles. I no longer remember his real name, but he was actually a very warm, nice guy underneath the scruffy exterior. He gave me a lot of help on my 105 homework.

During my time (87-91), Meyer was the social library, with a steady buzz of talking and people cruising around looking for procrastination partners. I was never the most focused studier, so that was the wrong environment for me. Whenever I chose a library in which to study, I chose Green.
Also, remember the Nerdy Walk of Shame? This had nothing to do with sorority girls and frat houses, but Meyer and Green. Meyer, I think, closed at eleven, but then you could walk over to Green, which shuttered at midnight, for that extra hour of studying.

I wonder if that was someone I knew. (I started in the CS PhD program in '81, so might have overlapped with him.)

I found that physics required a bazillion hours in the physics library.
Green was mainly a handy place for working on 24 or 48 hour take home exams.
And I didn't like the physics lounge.

I wonder when the term UGLI died out. (Or did it come back?)
In the mid-80s we joked about it being an administration imposed nickname that no real students ever used, though apparently an early generation did so.

I mostly did those in my room. For studying my group usually used a dorm room, or one of the new ones in, uh, the White Plaza student center place. (I am really starting to forget places' names...)

Like Garvin, I was a fan of the Main library. I would go to the same carrel just about every day. I called studying there in the evening "going to the bright lights."Â
You could open the windows in those days. There were trees then on the north side of the building. (Are they still there?) A limb extended almost to the window of my carrel. Tree, limb and study environment changed with the seasons. In the fall the leaves turned and it was beautiful. In the winter the limb swayed with the wind (which you could only vaguely detect through the nearly opaque glass) and the cold air got through even with the window closed. Then in spring the tree was glorious green and you could open up the window to the warm air. There were a few squirrels in the tree but otherwise there were NO DISTRACTIONS in the Main, which (whether attractive heartbreakers or uninspiring knuckle-draggers) were about all UGLY had to offer. I am very susceptible to distractions. The problem with the Main was that it closed about 10:00 p.m. So I would slip off to the UGLY basement, which then was part of the Main and kept the same hours. The basement attendants would just leave at closing time and you could study down there as long as you wanted. Just make sure the door closed behind you when you left and you could repeat the trick every night.Â
I remember some of the graffiti near my seat:Â "Is this animal [rendering of microscopic life form] 'higher' than Norm Wessels?"Â "Jerk Off, Suck Off, Check-ov, Rimsky-Korsak-off, That's Een-off" written by different people and "I schwer, dieses Buch ist hart." It was a kind of fellowship of minds grappling with the difficult.
Halloween Night 1973 I was in the basement late. Everyone was gone. A gruesome murder had occurred on campus recently and the deserted basement started feeling creepy as the night wore on. Then about 12:30-1:00 I heard something that sounded exactly like someone taking a deep breath right behind me. I envisioned a killer inhaling just before he slit my throat, felt every hair on my head stand up and my blood run cold. But it was only the ventilation system. It noisily inhaled again a few minutes later.
