I think part of it is getting on more kids (certainly the elite kids) earlier. We just offered 5-star DT Rashan Gary. It's great that we offered him now, as it seems early enough, but the list of schools who had already offered (and have been recruiting him) is very very long, some have been recruiting him since last year. The longer you wait to start recruiting these guys (and for really highly rated guys I think that probably means an offer) the harder and harder it will be to make up ground against the other options. I can imagine you would even get into situations where they're overwhelmed with the offers and interest and just don't have the time to research somewhere new or go to another camp or whatever. I think the point is guys who are elite need to be identified and offered early (maybe it means more offers, maybe not). If you find out come summer that they just won't make the admissions cut-off or whatever that's fine, they have plenty of time to go somewhere else, but if you don't get on them early they'll already be somewhere else by the time you get on it.
