Agree that taking a QB every year should be the goal.  Attrition through transfer and graduation as well as the prospect that the player is not as good as evaluated almost requires recruiting a QB every year.  What if we had not taken Hogans because we had Nunes and Nottingham (neither worked out very well).

Shaw seems to feel that attrition through transfer is in fact promoted by having too many qbs on the roster at one time - which is undoubtedly true. If you take lots of qbs, I guess the hope would be those transfering out are less good than those staying - which may or may not be true.

The "what if we had not taken Hogan" could be said about any qb that ever started. A more interesting aspect on Hogan is that was a year two qbs were taken: Hogan and Crower. Others have noted Hogan was the second qb taken, which is true by commitment date. Whether that was true by priority is less clear. Hogan was higher rated by most services, but don't know if that was true by Stanford.

Broadly, Harbaugh liked recruiting qbs, Shaw much less so. Since Harbaugh started we took the following:
2007 - Crow, Kiilsgaard  [initially commited to Wlat]
2008 - Luck
2009 - Hill (mission), Nunes
2010 - Daniel, Lloyd (mission), Nottingham
2011 - Crower, Hogan    [initially commited to Harbaugh]
2012 - None
2013 - Burns
2014 - Chryst
2015 - none
