CowboyIndian, I had heard of the Wrecking Crew documentary and had vague plans to watch it one of these days. Your post pushed me to find it. Man, what a movie!!!!! Genius. You know who should really love it? The Monkees. All these decades, people have been razzing them for not playing on their own records. Now we find out nobody else did, either. Not the Beach Boys. Not the Byrds. None of 'em.

Brian Wilson did write much of that great music, which is the rarer gift.

Now your point on the Byrds is a good one.  Of their three best songs, Dylan wrote two of them, and Pete Seeger and King Solomon wrote the other one.  If they didn't even play the instruments, what the hell did they do?  I guess they sang, making them a folk rock boy band?
