Toward the end of the war Lee was mentally exhausted.  Current diagnosticians would have said he was suffering from clinical depression.   At one key battle in N. Virginia Lee lay in his tent saying "We must strike a blow...We must strike a blow"  but his inability to take command, or even appear on the battlefield let a partially trapped Union army escape to fight again.  

That never would have happened if Lee\'d been on Prozac....or had a couple of toots of meth.  

Actually, Lee probably lucked out that he didn\'t have a kidney stone.  By the battlefield medical standards of the day,  the docs would have simply amputated the what was hurting,  which in this case would have been the lower half of his entire body.
