My high school coaches were cops, the head coach was elevated to detective shortly after I graduated in 1980.  I once talked with him about catching criminals, and thieves in particular.  He said it wasn't all that difficult, that criminals almost always do something that is pretty fundamentally stupid, and that he and his partners could make a living off solely off of males under the age of 25 if they wanted to.  To him, the funniest part was that thieves are always amazed that they got caught.  Simply amazed.
