First of all, someone can choose UCLA over Stanford and still be serious about academics, just like someone can be serious about football and choose Stanford over Alabama.

Second, does anyone know if Phillips is taking two AP classes his Senior year?  If he is, it's not like Stanford's coaching staff will stop recruiting him.  See Devery Hamilton last cycle.

I think it's absolutely possible to get a great education at UCLA, BUT I don't think there's the same level of support/emphasis for academics within the football program. It's one thing to attend a top academic school, but quite different to actually have the institutional support to take advantage of those academics. A truly motivated student-athlete can get a quality education at either school, but I think one school makes that process much easier than the other.
