If you look at sports as war games, all the anthem playing makes sense. It also explains why sitting for the anthem is a greater offense than displays of religiosity during games. Although both are annoying to many, as long as it's associated with the predominant religion, religiosity is seen as supporting war while sitting for the anthem is seen as treason.
