I personally like our first national anthem, Hail Columbia, created in 1798 under John Adams and in honor of George Washington. Congress never adopted it, but it was the de facto anthem through the Civil War and on for most of the rest of the 19th C. Although the Star Spangled Banner references an event in the War of 1812, it did not become our national anthem until 1931--although the song was around as a patriotic song for a few decades before that.
Hail Columbia is available in classical and operatic versions, but Whitney Houston and Marvin Gaye would no doubt have improved it! It is now used as the Vice President's march.Â
