Umami burger = meh
To expand: I had heard of Umami Burger's reputation, so I was excited to try it. They have some interesting stuff on the menu, even if the prices ($13 - $15) would offend Stupac's sensibilities. The run of the mill Umamiburger caught my eye: burger, parmesan cheese, shitake mushrooms, caramelized onions, and house made ketchup.
The good news is that it was a healthy portion of beef, and it had a pretty tasty bun. The sweetness from the caramelized onions came through. But the rest was very meh. Ironically for a place called "umami" burger, the burger's taste was pretty bland. I thought the parmesan cheese would bring a nice saltiness to the burger, but sadly it didn't. I also didn't get much acidity or sweetness from the roasted tomato; it mostly blended in with the ketchup. The shitake was nice, but again, not as flavorful as I had hoped. And, though the bun tasted yummy and fresh, it was a bit soggy.
It wasn't awful, but my verdict is that it is overrated.
