1990 Big Game, but mostly because I was in the Band.
As the game wound down to its climax, the Band dutifully shifted to its post-Game spot behind the Cal end zone. We cheered mightily for the touchdown that drove the score to 24-25... but we didn't set a foot on the field.
When the two-point conversion failed, we groaned mightily... but we didn't set a foot on the field, even as the entire Kal campus and football team prematurely stormed the field in celebration.
A Kal football player (to this day I wish I knew which one) wagged his finger in my face. I didn't step on the field, but instead shouted, "there's 12 seconds left, asshole!"
The team recovered the onside kick... but the Band didn't set a foot on the field.
We got the lucky penalty... but the Band didn't set a foot on the field.
Only after the kick sailed through the uprights and the final gun sounded did we finally take the field in an orgy of rock exhilaration. I believe there was nudity involved.
The LSJUMB, like all good Stanford students, learns from its mistakes. Kal... not so much.
