During second class year, he became a science experiment for skin doctors across the country, having contracted the worst case of hand, foot and mouth disease since ‘Nam.

Getting hand foot and mouth as an adult is no laughing matter.  While my kids all skated through it, my case was so bad I couldn't swallow for a week.  I came to learn the difference between "good saliva", the type that soothes as it goes down, and the bad kind, which you hold in your mouth and then spit, lest you try and swallow the stuff and feel the burn.

It got to the point where I asked a doctor for some magic mouthwash (a concoction of mylanta, benedryl, and viscous lidocaine (an anesthetic) just to be able to tolerate it.

The upshot is I lost 10 pounds over the course of a week.
