And a nod to those who bore the political costs of the reversal. The outside world rarely sees and certainly never acknowledges what it takes.
It's a little hard to know for sure without being inside, but this sounds to me like a de facto fairly serious rebuke of both the OCB and Boardman. Probably won't have many consequences since Etch is stepping down, but otherwise I wouldn't have been surprised if Boardman discovered an opportunity he couldn't turn down in about a year or so.

That was my interpretation as well (no inside info here either).
Etch will be around for 5 months(-ish) and I hope will make sure things are in proper order before his departure.

From the article:
Quote:Greg Boardman, vice provost for student affairs, who has led the division for more than a decade, will retire Aug. 31. Provost Persis Drell will share plans for a search committee early in spring quarter.may, or may not, be related to his handling of the Band Ban.

At the same time, many students associate Boardman with unpopular decisions to restrict hard alcohol at undergraduate parties and residences and to suspend the Stanford Band. Over the past decade, Boardman has also come under fire for issues as varied as mental health services at Stanford and the adjudication process for Honor Code violations in part due to the wide-ranging responsibilities of the Office of Student Affairs.
