Except your formulation is not right either because you give an 8 seed the same credit for beating a 9 seed as you give a 16 seed for beating a 1 seed. 

That's not what I did.  12 Quinnipiac beating 5 Marquette  got 7 points.    8 beating 9 9 beating 8 gets 1 point.
