The pass protection and therefore the passing attack, will be more effective, no matter who the QB is, as a result.
If past practice is a predictor, true frosh linemen will be given the role as extra blockers in Ogre formations. Later in the season, they may get a chance to start. Let's look at recent top linemen as frosh:
Kyle Murphy
- 14 games played with two starts
- Along with Joshua Garnett, first true freshmen offensive linemen to start at Stanford since 2000
- Averaged 25 snaps per game at jumbo tight end and both offensive tackle positions
Andrus Peat
- 13 games played, no starts
- Rotated throughout season at left tackle; averaged 20 snaps/game
Joshua Garnett
- 14 games played with one start
- Played both guard positions and fullback
Of course, the current OL situation may require a different approach. But history tells us that David Shaw will be very cautious before inserting true frosh in a starting lineup.
