Stanford--my teachers and fellow students--significantly improved my critical thinking skills, but I was an unusual case: a pathological underachiever and virtual non-reader from an inferior school system.  My skills needed work, and responded well to that work.  But does Stanford still accept students like me?  My guess is that very rarely did back then (the 70's) and never do now.
