Given that it's almost October and Stanford has only 7 commits, none who were the top player offered at his position, I've been wondering if it's time to be more concerned than usual about the 2018 recruiting class. So I checked out the small-in-number class of 2013, and found via 247 that it had only 5 commits by October 1, 2012:
Ryan Burns QB
Francis Owusu WR
Eric Cotton TE
Peter Kalambayi ILB
Sean Barton ATH
That class was ranked 11th in the conference, and I assumed that was because of the lack of commits. In fact, the class was lumped in a second tier with UW and UO, well behind SC and UCLA.
So, for those who are more accomplished tea-leaf readers than I, is it time to be more concerned than usual?

If there's one thing people have learned in Berkeley, it's that you can't put "Cal football" and "Rose Bowl" in the same sentence. The words just don't fit. You'd be better off linking "covered wagons" with "Mars travel." (Bruce Jenkins, Cal '70, SF Chronicle, Nov. 11, 2017)
