Well, if Stanford was a true powerhouse, football tail wagging the school dog kind of program, I'm sure the family would have found employment and housing in the Palo Alto, and the girlfriend would have been given a scholarship to attend Stanford.

I just don't think people in the sports media world have a true appreciation for how incredible it is for Stanford to compete at the highest levels of college football.  The self-imposed restrictions the school places on itself, the impossibly small pool of recruits that can even get into Stanford, and then still having to compete with the local schools a kid has pulling at him, the lack of a massive and passionate fan base with incredible game day atmosphere, makes it just frankly amazing that Stanford can compete with its peers.
