If you're talking to a 17 year old about the future, it's critical to remember that their frame of reference is not the same as that of an adult, who has a lifetime of experience and bad decisions behind them.

When I was in high school, my father repeatedly told me it was important to go to college.  He hadn't graduated from a four year college and he was doing quite well financially.  I wanted to go to college on my own, but he never articulated why it was important to go.  A quarter century later, when my older son started to speak admiringly of people who had done well but hadn't completed college, I put it in a way that a 14 year old could understand.  We went for a drive and had the following conversation:

"See that mansion?  If you get A's and go to a great college, that's where you'll live.  If you get B's, you'll live in our house.  If you get C's or worse, that's the bridge you'll live under.  See that BMW you've been admiring?  Get A's and it's yours.  Get B's, and you get the minivan.  Get C's or worse, hope you enjoy the skateboard.  If you get A's, that's the woman you'll marry, etc..."

So when dealing with Stanford vs. U$C recruits, show them this:

Stanford, #3 in CA colleges for pay.  C.al, #7.  U$C, #10.  Yes, I know it's bogus.  Yes, I know it's statistically shaky. But I think it's directionally correct, and any teenager can understand it.  You can even explain to the football recruits that it's inaccurate and the disparity is actually greater...
