Thing is, though, I always question the school's 40 times. The school has every incentive to fudge, and it's not like there's a real 40 time in the same sense that there's a real vertical jump or bench press.

Totally fair, though each scout times the 40 himself and they tend to compare notes afterwards to make sure there's a consensus on what the "real" time was. So, Stanford can say 4.49, and one hopes that's the scouts' consensus number as well, but each team would emphasize its own scout's time, I should think.
