I think you are right on, but, given the fact that we had been consistently successful in baseball and women's basketball and just about every other sport and yet were not perceived as able to "be successful in major sports" illustrates the fact that "major sports" are basically considered to be those that have the highest Nielsen Rating, viz., football and men's basketball. Unless it's an Olympics year. :)
