Shaw sometimes has what I would call a pleased or knowing smirk on his face when he is on the sidelines (occasionally in interviews).  Some people interpret that facial expression as smugness.  I disagree.  Most often, people are reacting to their preconceived ideas about those from Stanford.  I sometimes have friends mention those silver-spoon rich kids from Stanford when they know that I was a scholarship kid who was the first in my family to attend college.  I guess they think that I am just the exception.  While most of my Stanford friends had parents who went to college, they were pretty middle to upper-middle class kids.  C'est la vie, if Stanford football wasn't winning, others might not think Shaw was smug.
