Positives
- Appears to have been no injuries (Swann missed a series)
- Not nearly as stubborn with run as in past; had more pass attempts than run attempts
- Costello's sense of urgency getting plays called and no delay penalties
- Costello's pocket movement and patience
- 68% completion percentage and over 300 yards passing
- 5 sacks and lots of other pressures
- nearly 50% 3rd down conversions on O
- 30% 3rd down conversions on D
- Yards per rush allowed was 4.1, lower than 2017's average of 4.6 (slight positive)
- Michael Williams is so much better now
- Adebo is a star in making
- Gabe Reid would have had a sack if he took a better angle to the QB after brilliant spin move
- Love had 3 catches and was targeted a few more
- JJAW as beast
- Shaw going for 2 when it wasn't mandatory!
- Bailey showing why he is an All-American Punter
Not So Positives
- It's one thing to be stoned more than not, but entirely another for the OL to be so completely unable to move the defense
- Passing game demonstrated no imagination; no slants or crossing routes with very little chance for YAC
- Never once moved the pocket for QB; no rollouts, no bootleg actions
- Not a single play-action pass I can recall; WTF? If you aren't doing RPOs, you have to run some play actions, with D selling out to stop run!
- Run game demonstrated no imagination; how many outside the tackle runs were there, 3?
- Kaden Smith virtually invisible
- JJAW and Irwin 11 combined receptions; all other WRs 2 for 2 yards
- Terrible tackling by the Safeties, particularly Ben Edwards
- Too many 10+ yard and 5+ runs yielded
- Where was Heimuli? Dude was a beast in Spring!
- Shaw refusing the holding penalty on the wrongly called QB first down run; even if it was 1/2 yard short, back them up!
All-in-all, more positive than negative, and given the lack of imagination on offense, pretty solid win. Don't know if y'all remember, but I made a post a few months ago saying that Stanford needed to win this game something like 38-17 or 31-10 for me to believe Stanford is a legit conference title contender. This would demonstrate an offense capable of scoring and a defense capable of stopping people. Mission accomplished.
The good news is Stanford played a much tougher team than the UNLV squad USC will be running circles around today, and as a result should be much more prepared for next week than Southern Cal.
