Going back to the three-home-games-before-students-arrive complaint, here's the outlook for future seasons:
2019
August 31 at home vs. Northwestern
September 7 open, but likely at USC?
September 14 at UCF
September 21, likely orientation weekend so many students are on campus.
Likely schedule: One home, two away
2020
September 5 at home vs. William & Mary (will actual attendance top 10,000?)
September 12 open, but likely at home vs USC?
September 19 open, but likely a conference game away?
Likely schedule: Two home, one away
2021
September 4 at Kansas State
September 11, but likely at USC?
September 18 at Vanderbilt
Likely schedule: Three away (!)
2022
Other than an early/mid-September game at home vs USC, I have no idea
2023
Other than an early/mid-September game at USC, I have no idea
2024
August 31 at home vs TCU
September 7 at home vs Vanderbilt
September 14 open, but likely at home vs USC?
Likely schedule: Three home
So it seems that the rash of early home games is an even-year thing unless the Notre Dame/USC issue is addressed some other way. Also, 2024 could be one heck of non-conference schedule. All Power 5 plus Notre Dame!

If there's one thing people have learned in Berkeley, it's that you can't put "Cal football" and "Rose Bowl" in the same sentence. The words just don't fit. You'd be better off linking "covered wagons" with "Mars travel." (Bruce Jenkins, Cal '70, SF Chronicle, Nov. 11, 2017)
