During the ASU game last light, there were several instances of Speights struggling for extra yardage, while 2 or 3 or 4 linemen stood around the pile watching to see how long he would remain upright. Watching other games, the OL for EVERY team gets behind the pile and pushes in this situation, resulting in at least a couple of extra yards, and, quite frequently, 5-10 extra yards. I began witching OL play for this tendency and I noticed that many of our linemen try to execute their initial block, and then are finished, regardless of the play continuing. If you have the game on DVR, take a look for yourself. It is not every play, but there are far too many plays that we do not have 11 players playing to the whistle.
Good observation. We seem to have more than our share of OL standing on their feet watching the pile this year. We have one guy who seems very undersized and can't stay engaged very long. We have another guy who apparently lacks strength and just got tossed around during the first series. We had no success running to that side at all. The only guy who seemed to play a good game last night was Little. Almost all of our top 6-7 guys have been in the program several years, and with the exception of the injured Herbig, all started last year. I'm beginning to think it all points to OL coaching.
