I chose to not join my friends in watching the game as I had other commitments, and thus missed out at getting to walk onto the field as a 50th reunion grad, and watching Stanford "coug" it's chances to win.  As it was, the attendance was pathetic, particularly for a "home coming."

Seems odd to complain about the lack of attendance in the sentence immediately following an admission that you contributed to said lack of attendance.
