I believe that the hard hats made their first appearance in 1982 - lots of stuff happened in and around that game. 
Here is an image of our GaryT on the ground beneath Kevin Moen. You cannot see what Gary is wearing on his head, but several others have hard hats. 



I was wearing a hard hat that afternoon. The post-collision photo shows the hard hat in the air, having been dislodged as I hit the ground. Oranges weren't the only hazard: post-game that day, there were also some glass bottles thrown at us. Water balloons also were popular projectiles.
