I was at Maples tonight and it was great fun. I'm no expert but here are my impressions. We were definitely playing nervous to start the match. I thought our service errors were clear signs of nervousness. Also, the timing and height of the sets for our kill attempts were definitely off early in the match. We seemed tentative and the sets were too low or off line so we couldn't get good power or angles. That made it easier for them to block our attempts.
Penn State was jacked up and was jumping out of the gym so we had a hard time dealing with their strong outside kills. I thought our block improved because we moved a little farther outside, waited a little longer, and started jumping higher with more energy. We started playing better and Penn State stopped playing out of their minds. I learned to hate Penn State during all those years we lost to them so this definitely felt great.
Our crowd was very into the game but in the Stanford way. Not lots of organized cheering but plenty of support. I hope our team has a great final four and brings home a title.
Cheers,
Pete F.
