The problem is, the question "is the coach doing a good job" is far too complex to be answered by one number. Except of course win-loss record, though that is obviously devoid of nuance and doesn't seem to be what you are after.

Even if the question is restricted to "is the coach doing a good job in things other than recruiting" (which seems to be what you are getting at - certainly what BC's suggestion is getting at), that's still rather difficult for any single number.

Recruiting is one part of the head coach's job. Development (practice) is another. Staff management is another. Clean program is another. Xs & Os is another. etc.

Results on the court are the ultimate judge. If the results aren't meeting expectations, then the head coach is failing at something. I don't think it matters as much why the results aren't there unless it's due to circumstances beyond the coach's control (player injuries, leaving the team, etc.)
