The Pitt game showed how you absolutely must pass the ball effectively in modern football. As Ron Jaworski always says “points come from the passing game.” Doesn’t mean TD passes per se, more so that you usually need a few chunk plays to score on drives, and they most often come from passing the ball. 

Both Stanford’s TD drives were set up by effective pass plays.
