Didn’t Kirk Chambers come back from his mission in Dec, participate in spring practice and then start as a true freshman the following year?

To the best of my recollection, Kirk Chambers started school at Stanford in the fall of 1997, was on the roster during the 1997 season but did not play (making 1997 a redshirt year), went on his mission in January 1998, returned to Stanford in January 2000, participated in spring practice, and became a starting tackle in the fall of 2000.

In his first season at Stanford, Kirk earned the starting assignment at left tackle and held that position throughout the '00 campaign ... He started all 11 games and was an integral part of the Cardinal's offensive line ... Co-winner with Chris Lewis of the Menlo-Atherton Trophy as the team's top freshman. The 1998-99 Seasons: Did not play football while spending both seasons as part of a Mormon Mission in Berlin, Germany.

In High School: A SuperPrep All-American as an offensive lineman as a senior at Provo High School in 1997

After high school, Chambers departed for a two-year LDS mission to Berlin, Germany, and upon his return, he enrolled at Stanford as a freshman in 2000. He's started all 35 games since for the Cardinal.
