Until I saw it in print here, I thought a shovel pass was a shuffle pass.

Also, it is a "hook and lateral" play, not a "hook and ladder".  The reference is to the WR route (a hook) and what is done after the wide receiver does after catching it (a lateral), not to a type of fire truck.
